Time for a break ...

... from Project Baby and Project House. Partly because it's the holidays, and partly because we were 0 for 2 in both categories this week.

First we lost a mini-bidding war over the house we'd liked. We knew we liked the house, and also knew that the listing agent was having another open house this past Sunday. After considering the pros and cons, we decided to concentrate on "getting our ducks in a row" (as our agent, RSLS's brother-in-law, put it) rather than rushing to make an offer before the open house. Then things got a little exciting:

Monday - we learned another party had made an offer. We set up an appointment to meet with our agent the next morning.

Tuesday morning - our agent took us through all the paperwork, prepared our offer, and answered a million questions.

Tuesday afternoon - our agent called, and said the seller had made a counteroffer to us and to the other prospective buyer. Per our earlier discussion, he was going to go ahead and split the difference between our first offer and the counter. The agent said not to expect to hear anything until the next day.

Tuesday night - our agent called again, and said the other prospective buyer had made another offer that was $3,000 more than the seller's counteroffer -- and was only $1,000 less than the current listing price.

Then Wednesday morning we went in for a pregnancy test, which came back negative. Yep, that's two things we won't be getting for Xmas. At least we'll start house-hunting again after the New Year, when there are more open houses. As for Project Baby, we'll take a longer break from that and do some other things that need be to taken care of ... and maybe do some traveling too. After the year we've had, we deserve it!

A heartwarming holiday story

Came across this fun link while working today (see, it's not all car crashes and political mudslinging):

Runaway Reindeer

It's very cute, though I still think the Somerville Gates are funnier.

Sox pulling out all the stops

Just checked for an update on the winter meetings, not expecting much, and found the Sox had reached preliminary agreements with two talented and high-priced players, outfielder J.D. Drew and shortstop Julio Lugo. If true, this means the Sox payroll will be even higher next year (especially with Drew's five-year, $70 million contract). It'd also mean that Trot Nixon and Alex Gonzalez won't be returning, which is understandable but sad, particularly in Trot's case. I guess even Ray Bourque ended his career somewhere else.

Update, 12/15: Matsuzaka - signed. Drew -- signed. Lugo -- signed. Guess Terry Francona knows what he's getting for Xmas.
